The Tale of Despereaux is a children’s novel about an adventurous mouse. A symbolic theme running throughout the book is a spool of red thread that the mouse uses to find his way back home. I chose to incorporate physical materials such as burlap and stitching to draw attention to and stylize this red thread while also instilling a sense of comfort and familiarity to call back to the idea of home.
